Welcome back to your Mindful Monday series focused on sleep—a pillar of health that often gets pushed aside in the HR world. But rest isn’t optional; it’s essential, especially when you're leading people, solving problems, and managing constant change. The good news? What you eat can help.
Certain foods naturally support better sleep, while others can make it harder to wind down. Use this for your own routine—and share it with your team to encourage healthier habits across your organization.
Sleep-Supporting Foods & Drinks
- Magnesium-rich foods: Almonds, bananas, spinach, and pumpkin seeds help relax muscles and calm the nervous system.
- Tart cherries: A natural source of melatonin—perfect as juice or a small bowl of cherries before bed.
- Fatty fish: Salmon, tuna, and mackerel boost serotonin, improving sleep regulation.
- Warm milk: Contains tryptophan to help your body produce melatonin and serotonin.
- Herbal teas: Chamomile, peppermint, and lavender teas help you relax without caffeine.
Sleep-Disrupting Foods & Drinks
- Caffeine: Found in coffee, tea, energy drinks, and chocolate. Avoid after 2 PM to prevent late-night alertness.
- Alcohol: It may help you fall asleep, but it disrupts your deep sleep cycle.
- Spicy or heavy meals: These can trigger indigestion and interfere with comfort at bedtime.
HR Tip: Share these tips in your team huddles, wellness newsletters, or internal comms. Ask your team: What’s one thing you’ll try this week to eat (or avoid) for better sleep?
