Mindful Monday: Time-Change Hangover? Reset Your Sleep Routine

Feeling the effects of the time change? You’re not alone. A disrupted internal clock can leave you groggy, unfocused, and running on empty—something HR professionals already battle daily. Prioritizing sleep hygiene can help reset your rhythm and boost your energy.

Sleep Hygiene Strategies for Optimal ZZZs

Stick to a schedule – The time change already threw you off. Help your body adjust by going to bed and waking up at the same time daily (yes, even on weekends!). Consistency strengthens your internal clock.

Declutter your space – A messy bedroom = more stress and harder unwinding. Keep work out of your sleep zone and create a calming, restful environment.
Power down before bed – Blue light blocks melatonin, making it harder to fall asleep. Swap screen time for reading or journaling at least 30-60 minutes before bed.
Practice relaxation techniques – Try box breathing (inhale 4 sec, hold 4 sec, exhale 4 sec, hold 4 sec) or guided meditation to ease stress and quiet your mind.
Time your meals wisely – Heavy meals close to bedtime can disrupt sleep. Eat dinner at least 2-3 hours before bed and take a short walk to aid digestion.
Hydrate smartly – Too many fluids at night = multiple bathroom trips. Stay hydrated earlier in the day and taper off in the evening.

HR Application: Model these habits for yourself—and share them with employees! Sleep deprivation affects performance, engagement, and well-being. Consider incorporating sleep hygiene tips into wellness initiatives, sharing resources, or even hosting a “Better Sleep Challenge” to help employees reset, too.

A well-rested HR professional is a more effective leader. How are you prioritizing sleep this week? Share your thoughts!
