If you’re on your second cup of coffee before noon or battling the mid-afternoon slump, your body might be waving a red flag. Long stretches without food, poor meal choices, and dehydration can lead to blood sugar fluctuations that zap your energy, patience, and focus—things every HR pro needs in abundance.
Taking care of yourself isn’t just a luxury; it’s a necessity. And here’s the kicker—you can use these same strategies to help support your employees, too! Because if you feel like we’re talking to you… we probably are.
Small Changes, Big Impact: Energy-Boosting Habits for You (and Your Team!)
- Take time to eat (and actually step away!): Your inbox won’t implode in 15 minutes, but skipping meals can impact your ability to concentrate, problem-solve, and support others. Encourage yourself—and your team—to take real breaks and refuel.
- Start strong with breakfast: Running on caffeine alone? Try adding protein (eggs, yogurt), healthy fats (avocado, nuts), and fiber-rich carbs (oats, whole grains) to keep your energy steady and your thinking sharp. Bonus: A solid breakfast can help prevent that mid-morning snack raid.
- Snack smarter: Those cookies in the breakroom might be calling your name, but a protein- and fiber-rich snack (think mixed nuts, apple with nut butter, or Greek yogurt with chia seeds) will keep you fueled longer. Maybe stock up in the office kitchen?
- Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate: Even mild dehydration can tank your energy and focus. Keep a water bottle nearby and nudge your colleagues to do the same—maybe even make hydration a workplace wellness challenge?
- Treat yourself—strategically: A mindful indulgence (a piece of dark chocolate, a favorite fruit, something nostalgic) can boost creativity and give you a quick mental reset. Sometimes, it’s the small joys that keep us going.
The way we fuel our bodies directly affects how we show up—for ourselves, our teams, and our work. It’s not about perfection; it’s about making small shifts that help you feel and perform at your best.
HR Challenge: What’s one small change you can commit to this week? And how can you support your employees in doing the same?
