HR professionals wear many hats, often juggling their own goals while supporting employees in reaching theirs. Last week, we talked about identifying a habit you wanted to change. This week, let’s go deeper—what’s the “why” behind your commitment to that change?
We often struggle to stick to goals because we rely on fleeting external motivation. To create lasting habits, it’s essential to anchor them to a deeper purpose—your intrinsic motivation. This approach isn’t just for personal growth; it’s a powerful tool for helping employees thrive too.
Extrinsic vs. Intrinsic Motivation
Extrinsic Motivation
- Driven by external rewards like bonuses, promotions, or recognition.
- Effective for short-term goals but can fade when the reward is gone.
Intrinsic Motivation
- Comes from within—personal satisfaction, joy, or a sense of purpose.
- Helps create sustainable habits by connecting actions to deeper values.
How To Fuel Intrinsic Motivation
- Reflect on Your "Why"
- For yourself: Why do you want to adopt a habit? Does it align with your values or long-term well-being?
- For employees: Help them connect their roles or goals to a larger purpose, like contributing to team success or making an impact.
- Sustain Commitment
- For yourself: Write down your "why" and keep it visible as a daily reminder.
- For employees: Reinforce their "why" in one-on-one conversations or team meetings to keep engagement high.
By focusing on intrinsic motivation, you can not only foster habits that last but also support your employees in building resilience and finding meaning in their work.
This week's challenge: Take 5 minutes to reflect - what's your "why"? Whether it's for personal growth or helping your team thrive, connecting a deeper purpose can transform habits into lasting change. Write it down, make it visible and let it drive you forward!
