Today we're focusing on a skill that lies at the heart of every successful relationship in our professional and personal lives—communication. As HR professionals, we're constantly navigating conversations, from routine check-ins to resolving workplace conflicts. Yet, effective communication isn't just about exchanging information; it's about connecting with people and fostering understanding.
Embrace "I" Statements: Start conversations with phrases like "I feel... when... because... so I was hoping that we could..." This approach not only helps in expressing our feelings clearly but also avoids making the other person feel accused, thus reducing the chances of escalating tensions.
Adopt the LARA Technique: This simple yet effective method can revolutionize our interactions:
- Listen: Engage with the speaker without planning your response. Active listening means fully concentrating on what is being said rather than passively hearing the message.
- Acknowledge: Show that you understand and appreciate the speaker’s point of view. Simple acknowledgments like "I understand" or "that makes sense" can go a long way.
- Respond: After hearing them out, address their concerns or add your viewpoint in a way that builds further dialogue.
- Add: Contribute your thoughts and feelings constructively to round off the communication loop.
By incorporating these strategies into our daily interactions, we not only improve our professional relationships but also set a benchmark for healthy communication across all levels of our organization.
Here’s to building stronger connections one conversation at a time! Have a great week ahead!
